Dear Parents,

The children's MyMaths accounts have all now been set up. Your child has a letter for you which explains how to access the website and also gives your child's log in details and passwords. MyMaths Homework is designed to be attempted as many times as your child feels is necessary. It is absolutely fine to assist your child and to encourage them to attempt the activity more than once. If your child is becoming stressed our frustrated (or you are!) then please leave it. The MyMaths activities have been chosen so the children can practise Maths skills covered in class.  Please be reassured that we do give extra support to children who are struggling with a particular concept. There is technical guidance below which explains how to access MyMaths on an I-pad.

Please could you ensure that all jumpers, ties, shirts, skirts, pinafores and shorts are named. Matching unnamed jumpers with children at the end of playtime is very difficult.

Book changing and reading :

Reading books will be changed each week provided that there is written evidence in your child’s book that they have competed the book. We do value your comments. Please do let us know if your child is struggling with their book. Comprehension is a vital part of reading. Please stop your child every few pages and ask them questions about the story so far. If they are unable to answer your questions then it is vital that they re-read those pages. We would like the children to read to you every day please. They can read their books more than once. Please encourage and help your child to read other books too.

Home work will consist of daily reading, practising spellings, learning number facts and MyMaths homework tasks.

Each child has been assigned to one of 3 spelling groups. Your child will receive a set of spellings each Friday based on the sound patterns we have been covering in class. We will test the children on the following Friday. Your child has been given an exercise book for spelling practice. They will write their new list into this book. Please help your child to learn their spellings. They should use the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method. They should do their practising in their spelling book.  Please could you help us by making sure that your child brings their spelling book into school on a Friday? Spellings will also be posted below in the Homework folder for Autumn.

The number facts the children should be practising and learning are as follows:

·         number bonds to 20

·         counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s.

·         Saying the number that is one more, one less

·         Saying the number that is 10 more, 10 less.

Free fruit / vegetables are still provided for children in year 2 for their morning snack. Therefore, unless your child has an allergy, please encourage them to avail of the fruit that is on offer.

    Please send your child to school with a named water bottle each day. The children often get thirsty throughout the day. Please note that water bottles should contain water only .





 
  

Helping your child to tell the time.
 Children are expected to be able to tell the time to 5 minute intervals confidently by the end of Year 2. We really need your support in helping your child to practise and learn how to tell the time. It would be really helpful if your child could have access to a clock where they can move the hands. A clock can be made quite easily using a paper plate and a split pin to secure the hands. 
Special times:  Long hand on 12 = o'clock, long hand on 3 = 1/4 past, long hand on 6 = 1/2 past and long hand on 9 = 1/4 to.
Minutes past: Put your finger on the 12 and count in fives until you get to the long hand. Write that number down followed by 'past'. Look to see which number to short hand has gone past. Write that number down next.
Minutes to: Put your finger on the number where the long hand is. Count in fives until you get to 12. Write that number down followed by 'to'. Now look to see which number to short had is going to. Write that number down next.

Technical Guidance for Accessing MyMaths

As MyMaths is a fully online resource you will need nothing but an Internet connection and an up-to-date web browser with inbuilt Flash, or a recent version of Flash installed on your computer. 

MyMaths support all the major browsers such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Morilla Firefox, but please make sure that your Chrome or Firefox browsers are up to date and that your Internet Explorer is version 9 or higher.

Most Android tablets and mobile devices should be able to access the website using the Chrome or Firefox browser apps (among others), but users of iPad and other non-Flash devices will need to use the free Puffin Academy app, a mobile flash browser.
